OK so I finally have some inventory, so I'll be adding it to my Etsy shop soon. I don't have a good camera, just a camera phone, and it takes crappy pictures. So while my pictures aren't all that great, I hope they will do until I can get a new camera.

So far, I have necklaces, and earrings. All made with genuine sterling silver, and shell. I hope to add cat nip toys, tote bags, greeting cards, and more pet supplies!

Introducing: Martha Stewart for PETS!

Yes people, it's happened, Martha Stewart has FINALLY created a line of pet products! As if I needed another reason to buy her stuff...

So far, I only have the food scoops at left, and a bowl set from her. (Below)

The scoops are heavy duty steel, making them durable and long-lasting.

Love this! It's a three piece set, 2 bowls and a lid. The stainless steel bowl sits inside the blue bottom piece, but can be separated to make two bowls if you're traveling. Now, here's the fun part: If your dog or cat doesn't finish his food, you can use the lid to keep it fresh and refrigerate it! This is especially great for me because I feed my cat raw food, and expensive canned food, so if he doesn't finish it, I can keep it fresh and put it in the fridge so he can eat it later! Saves me money, I'm happy!

This toy box can be a multi-purpose tool. You can use it for pet toys, but I plan to use it for magazines and books. You can also put dog towels in there, too!

"According to local experts, there are a large number of toxic plants that owners and gardeners should be aware of, from plants like rhododendrons, narcissus, kalanchoe and nightshade, to onions and tomato plants, even marijuana. Additionally, pesticides and poisons, including snail bait and rat bait, are two of the deadliest chemicals for dogs. Elizabeth Burton, a Santa Cruz-based landscape designer, recommends doing ample research, including a thorough study of plants and chemicals that are potentially toxic, before putting in a garden that pets will share.Burton, of Elizabeth Burton Design, has worked as a landscaper for more than 25 years in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. Burton said she interviews clients extensively before beginning her planning, to find out what they're looking for and who -- or what -- will be spending time in the garden."

Research the plants that are in your yard, as numerous plants are toxic to animals.

Be aware of the fertilizers and pesticides you're using and their potential effect on animals. Communicate with your gardener. If that's you, do your research.

Use raised boxes to protect plants from dogs.

Experts recommend designing a safe place for your dog to play.

Certain foods, including avocados, onions and tomato plants are toxic for dogs.

Pet grass, grown from seeds. Can grow indoors, or outdoors. Organic soil is best to use when growing at home.

Cat nip: There are several varieties, some with flowers, some with large leaves. Also best grown in organic soil. Sold at some pet stores from seed, also sold in some garden shops.

Santa Cruz man takes finding lost pets to heart and the bank

SANTA CRUZ -- A Santa Cruz man is working to help owners find their lost pets, both locally and across the country.

Whether it's a dog who escaped a pet-sitter in Las Vegas, a cat roaming the countryside somewhere in North Carolina or a missing animal here in Santa Cruz County, Peter Glynn has carved out a specialized niche in the direct-mail industry.

Glynn founded www.LostPetCards.com in 2007, after working for two decades in the direct mailing business for another local company. Too often, Glynn said, a distraught customer would phone his then-manager and express disappointment that missing-pet announcements took at least a week to design, produce and mail. A week, when it comes to tracking down a pet, Glynn said, is too long. So Glynn set up his home business, based on a one-day turnaround.

"I knew there was a better way to do this," Glynn said. "I thought I would try it in my own time and my own way."

While it's a labor of love for Glynn -- he said he makes just enough money with Lost Pet Cards to pay for printing, equipment and work expenses -- he takes satisfaction in his business's ability to move quickly and, often, produce tangible results in days, if not hours.
"When the customer is on the phone, we'll pull up a digital map, and we take a look at their neighborhood, together," he said. "Within the hour, customers have received a digital map of the mailing. In two hours, we've gotten the postcards designed, which the customer approves. Ninety percent of the time, the postcards arrive in mailboxes the following day."

To date, LostPetCards.com has sent more than 350 lost pet orders to more than 30 states and 300 cities, according to Glynn, taking the form of about a half-million postcards.

Shawna Glynn, who helps with the bookkeeping in addition to home-schooling their two sons, ages 10 and 13, said that when a lost-pet announcement arrives, the entire family gathers around the computer. The boys are invested in the business too, often helping with production, which has taught them job responsibility, she said.
"Throughout the process, we all feel like we get to know the lost animal and it's so fantastic when it's a success story," she said. "And we've had situations where it wasn't a happy ending, but at least the owner has had some closure. We do everything we can to get that mailing out immediately. Time is crucial when you're looking for your pet."
Peter Glynn still remembers his first customers, a Las Vegas family who'd gone on vacation only to find out that the pet-sitter had lost their dog. After the mailing, the dog was discovered, safe, by neighbors within a day, he said.
Last week, Glynn's postcards helped find a missing San Francisco pup. And Glynn's latest pet-card order, produced Thursday, was 1,000 postcards sent to Littleton, Colo.

"It's an old beagle that got out in a pretty rural area," Glynn said. "There are lots of places to get lost there."
While Glynn's aware that direct marketing companies get flak for their use of paper goods, Glynn has tried to make his company as "green" as possible, using 100 percent post-consumer waste recycled card stock, purchased from a local family business. He then walks the mailers to the post office himself.
"We often combine walking our dog with delivering a lost-pet mailing or two," he said.

Lost Pet Cards is now under the umbrella of Glynn's Maverick Mailing, founded in 2008, a data, design, print and direct mailing business.

Chihuahua attacked by Coyote, saved by Pit Bulls

LITTLETON, Colo. -- A Littleton neighborhood is on edge after a coyote attacked and nearly killed a woman's dog Saturday morning.

These attacks are becoming more and more common.
According to the Colorado Division of Wildlife, in the wild where they are actively hunted and trapped, coyotes are generally elusive. Near cities or in areas where hunting and trapping is not allowed, coyotes may be aggressive. In urban settings, they can lose their fear of people and may even threaten domestic pets.

They've even attacked
children recently. One young boy in Erie had to receive rabies shots for several weeks after an attack.

Coyotes are being spotted more in alleys and open spaces, attracted to things like open garbage and bird feeders.
Buster is a Chihuahua-Terrier mix. He was attacked Saturday morning.
"He woke me up at 6:30 to do his thing. I let him out and I came out with him," said Jodi Robinette of Littleton. "And about a minute later, he screamed like I've never heard an animal scream."
Robinette ran after Buster and the coyote behind her home at 949 West Peakview Circle near Angeline Little Greenway Park.

"And right when I came around this corner, the coyote had my dog in his mouth, shaking him as he was running,” she said. "And then, I see the coyote at the very middle of this field drop my dog."
Turns out the neighbor’s pit bulls were going after the coyote.
"Oh I, I (pause) can't talk. (Chokes up). It's really, you know, to see it happen," said Robinette.
Buster is now in the oxygen chamber at Columbine Animal Hospital and Emergency Clinic. He is being kept on antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication and an IV.
Several neighbors witnessed the attack. Lucas Bouts said coyotes seem to be getting more dangerous.
"They've gone after pets before, usually behind fences. They've been becoming more aggressive," said Bouts. “And there are a lot of children in this neighborhood. The coyote’s just look at you like, ‘oh - we're used to people being around.’"
“I mean they need to be relocated. I don't want them destroyed or wish them harm, but it was just a tragedy for everyone," said Robinette.
As for the pit bulls - they scared off the coyote and then protected Buster under a bush.
"They were circling him and sitting by him. Making sure he was all right," said Robinette. "So it needs to be said that there’s some good (in pit bulls) and not all bad."
Back at the animal clinic, Buster's got a polka-dot bandage, a heated blanket and some pain medicine. He’s had a rough day.
He will need surgery Monday. He has a collapsed lung, chest injuries and many deep lacerations.
The Division of Wildlife suggests never allowing your pets to roam, especially at night.
The division also suggests you keep your pets in a fenced area, or a completely enclosed kennel at times when you're not able to keep an eye on your pet.

DIY: Pet Projects

I'm crazy about crafts, DIY projects, and of course, pets! So what's better than DIY project for pets? Here I'm featuring some amazing DIY Pet Projects I found on the internet!

This Pet Station is from Addicted to Decorating. This is amazing! One of my favorites. Up-cycling is popular these days, and this is the perfect example of up-cycling - Re-using old items, and making something new out of them. LOVE! This was featured in The New York Times!

Tag Silencers From Modern Dog Magazine!!!

I've taken it upon myself to make some of these with my own templates with the help of my Grandma, who used to be a seamstress.

I will also be making cat nip toys, and hopefully learn to knit/crochet and make doggy scarfs! Look for all of this on my Etsy shop soon! I also make organic dog biscuits, with only 3 main ingredients.

My home-made 3 ingredient dog treats!!

Ingredients:

peanut butter (organic, smooth or crunchy is fine)
Low sodium chicken broth
Unbleached flour (Or wheat flour if you prefer)

No special way to do it, just mix the ingredients together, add flour until the mix isn't sticky. You can also add carob chips like I did below. I used vegan carob chips :)

Animal Shelter Relief Rescue's Pet of the Week!

Meet: Kabuki!
Kabuki is a spirited, 2 year old Angora mix female cat who recently lost her home and is currently doing quite well in a foster situation to which she adapted very quickly. Kabuki is extremely playful and beautiful. She grooms her beautiful white coat fastidiously so that there are no mats whatsoever. She is a very independent girl yet quite people-oriented. After initial shyness around a dog Kabuki seems to be very tolerant of her now after only a couple of weeks. She is quite cuddly but not a lap cat and, although she is not particularly aggressive around other cats, Kabuki might be more appropriately the only cat in the household or with an equally dominant male cat. It is also not recommended that she live with small children. She is very action-oriented and fun to watch as she streaks around the house. Never a dull moment with Kabuki!

Animal Shelter Relief is a non-profit, 501c3 organization. They pull animals from over crowded shelters, and put them into foster homes where they are given appropriate vaccination, worming, socialization, and Spay/Neuter. All donations are tax deductible.

An amazing Success Story from ASA!

Not only was this wonderful dog adopted by an amazing new owner, I also got an email from his ORIGINAL owner who surrendered him to the shelter. It's not often this happens, in fact, it never has, so it really made my weekend.

New Foster Kittens!

Here they are!

My two new foster kittens. They have some runny eyes, that I'm keeping clean and putting medicine in.

They are very hissy, especially the black and white one - He's very fearful, we're working on that. He also has a broken tail, the last half of the tail is completely bent almost in half, so it looks like he has a bobbed tail. Poor guy :(

I've named the black and white one "Bowser" and the other "Toad." Bowser and Toad are Super Mario Brothers characters. I named Bowser because he's the cranky one! And Toad because he wants to be friendly, but he tries to be like his brother sometimes, so he acts like a toad! Both are boys. They are pretty big, so I think they are already 8 weeks, maybe 7.

They will both be adoptable through Animal Shelter Relief Rescue in a couple of weeks.

EmBARKing on a new endeavor

As of today, I am officially a volunteer for Animal Shelter Relief, a Santa Cruz County based rescue that pulls animals from local shelters, and puts them into foster homes to adopt out.

As of right now, I am "doing" their website - Updating, and adding to it. Possibly a re-do of the whole site in the future. I will also be helping to manage their Networking sites, and helping out at adoption events, taking pictures, and maybe even foster!

Right now, they have four dogs up for adoption, and a ton of cats and kittens! (It's the season!) So check them out, and add them on Facebook, Myspace, or follow them on Twitter!

CARMEL, Calif. -- A local congressman introduced legislation Thursday that would close a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act.

Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, introduced the Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety Act, which will close the current loophole that allows large, commercial dog breeders who sell on the Internet to avoid licensing and regulation.

“The Internet loophole in the Animal Welfare Act has resulted in widespread abuse of dogs in breeding facilities across the country,” Farr said in a news release. “We’ve seen hundreds of dogs crammed into small cages with no exercise or social contact. If we allow such abuse of animals, it doesn’t say anything good about our society.”

The Animal Welfare Act currently applies to breeders who sell to pet stores, but online breeders avoid the legislation because they are considered retail outlets.

The bill will require that all dog breeders who sell more than 50 dogs in a year be federally licensed and inspected. Also, dogs in commercial breeding facilities would be given the chance to walk and exercise for at least an hour each day under the legislation.

Berkeley Humane recovering after fire - How to Help

May 20th - Fire breaks out at Berkeley Humane

Breaking News: In the early morning of May 20, a major fire destroyed a large section of our shelter. We lost our entire cat sheltering area as well as laundry facilities and offices. We are currently without water, electricity and phone service.

A website has been made to help the rebuild of Berkeley Humane. Several merchants are donating 20% of their proceeds to the rebuilding of BH. Paco Collars created the effort, and is also donating a part of their proceeds to the cause.

Managing Successful Dog Introductions

Imagine you are out walking your dog around the neighborhood, when around the corner comes a neighbor with her dog. As the new dog spots you, its ears shoot forward, its gaze locks onto your dog, and it lunges to the end of the leash, pulling its owner across the street toward you. "It's okay, he's friendly!" she calls.
As the neighbor's dog rushes forward, your normally calm, laid-back dog freezes, emits a low growl, and maybe fires off a few warning barks. Your neighbor, looking shocked and slightly offended, drags her dog away.

What just happened?

Dog Etiquette 101

Nature intended dogs to meet and greet in ways radically different from the typical rushed, owner-inspired introductions. But because dogs are mostly kept on leashes and behind fences, they often forget or never learn proper canine greeting etiquette.
In a natural setting, dogs approach each other indirectly, in an arc. If a dog notices another dog from a distance, it will usually turn the side of its face or body to the other dog. He might even stop to sniff at a bush or something on the ground in order to appear less threatening. This communicates that no confrontation is intended.
Unfortunately, owners often miss or misread these cues and yank their dogs along, forcing them to confront other dogs in rushed, head-on greetings. In dog language, head-on greetings and staring are considered a challenge. Think of it this way: If I were to wave to you from a distance, that would be a nice gesture. If I were to rush up to you and wave my hand in your face, you might consider that rude, intrusive, and perhaps even threatening.
The sad thing is that dogs often get blamed for snappy behavior or are said to be "aggressive" when they are simply reacting naturally in these situations. Taking the time to properly introduce your dog to a new dog helps everyone be more calm and comfortable. The goal, therefore, is to emulate the dog's natural way of greeting.

Some Considerations

Before you set up a meet-and-greet, consider your dog's general attitude toward other dogs. Just like us humans, dogs are not necessarily going to like every dog they meet. If your dog has a solid history of playing well with properly matched playmates, then you have a better chance at success. Pairings of the opposite sex tend to be most successful of all.
To properly introduce your dog to a new dog, you'll need two people - one person per dog - and some high-value treats. These can be pieces of chicken, hot dog, or cheese, anything that your does doesn't normally have so it really gets his attention. Then, follow these five steps for a successful introduction.

Five Steps to Making Friends

Start in neutral territory, such as a quiet street or neighborhood park. Have both dogs leashed and keep some distance between them at first. Allow them to just hang out for a bit, using treats to reward your dog for remaining calm and focusing on you. If the dogs pull toward each other, begin to stare, or act overly excited, then you are too close too soon. Be patient and relax, so the dogs can relax, too. Once the dogs are comfortable in each others' presence, you can proceed with the walk.
Walk the two dogs in the same direction. This helps the dogs emulate a natural greeting by showing the sides of their bodies to each other. Remember to keep some distance between the dogs. Neither dog should be overly aroused, nervous, stiff, or fearful. You're looking for calm, confident behavior. (If your dog isn't able to relax, even at a distance, it might be best to contact a trainer to help you move forward.)
Gradually close the distance. Once they are relaxed and nicely interested in each other, you can gradually let them get close enough to sniff. Watch carefully! Warning signs include stiffening, low growling, avoidance, or hard stares. If you see these behaviors, calmly move the dogs away from each other again.
Allow them to play. When the dogs are relaxed and pleasantly interested in each other, one of them may invite the other to play. Keep the leashes loose and let them interact for a bit to make sure all goes well. When both dogs are showing loose, happy body language, you can drop the leashes (in an enclosed area) and let them play.
Reward polite behavior. Monitor the play to be sure the dogs are minding their manners. That means no humping, mounting, or pushy behavior! Every few minutes, before the dogs reach a state of overexcitement, call your dog out of play. Reward him for coming with some calm, happy interaction, then let the play resume. Keep the session short and end on a good note; don't let the dogs continue until they get cranky.

Remember, dogs don't necessarily want to meet every dog they see. When you do decide to introduce your dog to a new dog, observing proper canine etiquette will go a long way toward making the situation more comfortable. With you as the leader providing guidance and direction, the dogs can get to know each other safely and build a strong, trusting bond.

Hollywood star helps give abused dog new home

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- The dog found hog-tied in a muddy field and left for dead will get a new home Wednesday.

Kern County Animal Control director Guy Shaw joined actress Katherine Heigl and other animal advocates at a press conference Tuesday in Hollywood to announce that the male pit bull will find a new home with the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation.

The dog was named England after one of the animal control officers, Kristen England, who rescued him April 22 in the area of Sandrini Road and Highway 99 south of Bakersfield.

James Worley, 52, of Bakersfield, has been arrested and faces a possible charge of felony animal cruelty. Arraignment is pending and could happen later this week.

The Heigl Foundation, which was co-founded by Nancy and Katherine Heigl, will be working with Last Chance for Animals to offer rewards to those who help bring animal abusers to justice. LCA plans to be at Worley's arraignment.

"The thing is that you don't want to give up on these animals," Katherine Heigl said. "Just because they've been through what they've been though doesn't mean that they can't have an enjoyable, happy, loving life."

Carla's Adoption Success Story!

I met Carla when she was very first brought in to the Watsonville shelter. Soon, she was transferred to the Santa Cruz branch of the shelter, spayed, and was quickly adopted! I was shocked at how quick she was adopted! Little did I know, she was adopted by a Volunteer!

Letting my first foster go

So today I took little Sprinkles back to the shelter today to get adopted.

I'm happy for her, but I'm more sad for me. It's quiet here, a little, well, a lot boring, I don't have something to constantly clean or constantly watch.

No screaming, it's awkwardly quiet here. No one to rush home to.

I knew it would be hard to let go, but I didn't expect her to go up for adoption so quickly. It feels like she was ripped away from me without any explanation. I guess that's a separate story for another time.

I haven't cried yet today because it hasn't hit me yet. It's hard to think about her, and it was incredibly difficult to clean out her crate and gather all her things to return to the shelter. Dulce is so bummed.

It was so hard to leave her at the shelter today, she was frightened, and for the first time since I've had her, she head butted me as I was waiting for a kennel to be set up for her. That totally broke my heart.

I hope now that I know a little more about kittens, I will be allowed to foster a kitten (or two) again soon, (since kitten season is fast approaching), keyword being "allowed."

I know she'll be scooped up quick, and go to a good home. I miss her so much already it's crazy.

New Foster Kitten

Meet Sprinkles!

Sprinkles came from the Watsonville branch of Santa Cruz Animal Services.

She was apparently trapped, and brought in. Her mom and litter mates are still waiting to be trapped and brought in.

She is now socializing with my Pit Bull, and big mean cat, who isn't having any of it!

She is four weeks old so she will be with me for a while. She is my very first foster, and first kitten! This is a whole new experience for me. Stay tuned for updates!

Today, we lost a good boy. Boyfriend was a troubled young man, so goofy, so strong.

There was only so much we could do to keep him adoptable, and we couldn't make any more progress. We tried so hard. He meant so much to myself, and two other volunteers at the shelter. Karen and Michael worked so hard for him. They gave up their own lives for him.

We are so sad to lose you sweet boy. I've cried all night, even though you annoyed me sometimes, and I just couldn't connect with you. I still loved you, and my heart still breaks for you. I saw you till the end. I hope you enjoyed the bully stick we sent you off to the Rainbow Bridge with. Rest well sweet boy. We miss you.

"A pit bull mix in Tennessee has been sentenced to obedience training after his dogged attack on a local police car.

Winston didn't bite anybody, but he mauled a Chattanooga police car in what might have been a confused attempt to take a bite out of crime. The persistent pooch managed to tear off a section of the front bumper and damage the tires.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that a judge ruled that Winston had been a very bad dog. He was sentenced to obedience and canine good citizen classes, and he'll have to wear a tag that says he is "potentially dangerous."

Charges against his owner will be dismissed if the classes are completed successfully.

Owner Nancy Emerling said Winston got out of a fenced-in area at a welding shop March 14."

WOW!! I want to meet this judge! This is the kind of legislation, and "punishment" we need for bad dog offenders. Instead of banning, impounding, and euthanizing a specific breed or dog, required mandatory training is a MUCH better solution. ALL states should consider this. On that note, all PIT BULLS should go through mandatory training, and Canine Good Citizen classes!

There's a new Dog Trainer in town!

Well, relatively new anyway. Click 'em Dog Training focuses on positive reinforcement, and clicker training.

Karen is the Trainer with the goods. She has three rescue dogs of her own, including a Pit Bull. Karen volunteers at Santa Cruz Animal Services, the Watsonville branch. She trains adoptable dogs, specifically Bully breeds. She helped me train Gomer before Our Pack picked him up and brought him into foster care.

She is becoming an official Canine Good Citizen trainer, and soon will hopefully provide CGC prep training and testing at Santa Cruz Animal Services!

She has been training a dog named Marlee, an adoptable at SCAS. Marlee has been at the shelter since October 2009, and had shown some dog reactivity issues. Through positive reinforcement, consistency, and help from other dogs, Marlee has become a truly wonderful girl. Today, she was ADOPTED!!! A Foster failure, mind you :)

Canine Good Citizens

What is a CGC?

The Canine Good Citizen Certificate is an AKC test that a dog can take to achieve a certificate that proves your dog is a good citizen. This certification provides proof that your dog is trained, behaves politely in public. Many insurance companies that don't normally cover certain breeds may cover you, and some will reduce their rates. All Pit Bulls should have this. Many Rescue organizations and Shelters offer the testing for free. CGC Certificates are also a great thing to have if you're a renter.

Organizations like the Animal Farm Foundation offer grants to shelters and rescue organizations who provide AKC CGC testing at their facility. The test for dog owners is FREE, and the shelter or rescue is funded for providing the testing! Everybody wins!

This is Bubba.

Bubba was in the shelter for almost 6 months waiting for his forever home. Unfortunately, he was constantly overlooked because of his "tough" Pit Bull looks, and misunderstood breed.

Bubba did have some reactivity issues with other dogs, which made matters worse. On the plus side, he is great with kids.

Now here comes the success...Bubba was finally adopted at the end of January, 2010 by a wonderful family with kids!! What a great way to start off the new year!

His owner says he is doing wonderfully on walks when they see other dogs, and is improving every day. He is so gentle with the kids in the family, and is so loved.

If anyone deserves a happy success story, it's Bubba. He had a rough start at life, and spent a lot of undeserved time sitting in the shelter, watching dog after dog get adopted by families. Helping Pets of the Homeless

I recently found an article on The BARk's Website about helping pets owned by the homeless.
There, I found a link to a website for just that, called Feeding Pets of the Homeless.

It encouraged me to do some research, and I found several Pet Food Soup Kitchens, or Pet Food Bank's across the Country, such as the Santa Cruz SPCA, but what I didn't find was a service to collect pet supplies, such as collars, leashes, beds and blankets, and other supplies, and distribute them to the homeless that own pets and live on the streets. Read an article from the Sentinel about homeless people with pets.

Santa Cruz County has a huge homeless population, many with pets. This has inspired me to start a program or non-profit organization to collect pet supplies, and distribute them to the homeless. Similar to Second Harvest Food Banks barrels at local businesses, there would be barrels for Pets of the Homeless, where people can donate their pets old items, in good condition, or new items, such as collars, leashes, beds, toys. This could be done in conjunction with participating organizations such as the Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank, and other soup kitchens or homeless shelters.

I would drive around town, looking for homeless with pets, and offer them help, and supplies. This would also allow me to educate them about Spay and Neuter, and Vaccinations. They don't have the internet, or TV, so they don't know about these things. Offering FREE Spay/Neuter Services to them may help.

Pit Bulls and Owners

There is so much controversy surrounding Pit Bulls, and other Bully breeds today. But the question to ask is WHY?

Pit Bulls have been exploited for hundreds of years. Dog fighting, abuse, neglect, exploitation, poor ownership. Pit Bulls don't fight themselves, they don't abuse themselves, and they don't neglect themselves. Owners do this, owners exploit the breed, owners train them to "attack" or bite, or "protect" their drugs.

What's the solution? Responsible ownership, free or low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinics, and FREE or low-cost training classes specifically geared towards these breeds.

Some places have already jumped on the bandwagon to positive ownership, such as Santa Cruz Animal Services, who offer FREE and low-cost Spay/Neuter, and Our Pack, a Bay Area Pit Bull Rescue and Advocacy organization, who offer FREE and very low-cost training classes, specifically for Pit Bulls and other Bully breeds. (All breeds are welcome however)

What can YOU do? Support responsible ownership, be a responsible dog owner yourself, even if you don't own a Pit Bull. Obey leash laws, Spay and Neuter your animals, Microchip your pets, train your dogs, and obey local laws. Start a dog owners group, hike, or get together for dog owners in your area.

WATSONVILLE -- Owning a vicious dog in Watsonville just got more expensive.
Under new regulations, approved by the City Council on Tuesday, owners of vicious canines will be required to micro-chip their dogs, buy $100,000 of liability insurance and pay a premium for a pet license.
Owners who don't follow the rules and whose dog injures a person or animal could be found guilty of a misdemeanor and land in jail for up to six month.

"We're trying to address dogs that are unprovoked going after people or other dogs," said Marc Pimentel, city administrative services director.
Some on the council expressed concerns about the new rules.
"I'm definitely against having vicious dogs around, but when we get into the specifics, it seems like we're far reaching," said Councilman Greg Caput, saying the insurance requirement, for example, could unduly burden pet owners.
Councilwoman Kimberly Petersen said she shared Caput's concern, but only problem owners would be affected.
"I am an animal lover myself," she said. "Frankly I feel some of it is a bit strict, but overall it is reasonable."
Councilman Luis Alejo said he didn't want to wait to act until a serious incident occurred.
"The main thing is to make sure our neighborhoods are safe," Alejo said.
The rules apply to potentially dangerous or vicious dogs. A potentially dangerous dog is defined under state law as those that attempt to bite or bites a person without

provocation or seriously injures or kills another domestic animal. A vicious dog acts in an aggressive manner, inflicts severe injury or kills a human being without provocation.
Dogs designated dangerous or vicious also will be required to wear a fluorescent collar, and be kept inside or in a secure yard. They may be required to wear a muzzle when in public.

Owners also will be required to post warning signs on their properties in English and Spanish and notify in writing mail carriers, utility workers, public safety officers, landlords and others who might come into contact with the dog about the risk.

The issue first came before the council in August 2008 after two pit bulls escaped from a yard, frightening neighbors and killing five cats. Pit bulls also were involved in two conflicts in 2007. But the council rejected proposed rules targeting specific breeds and instead directed staff to tighten existing regulations.
